At least 18 militants including a commander were killed in airstrikes targeting militant positions in tehsil Bara of Khyber Agency on Sunday. The strikes were conducted by Pakistan army planes hitting militants’ hideouts in Malikdin Khel, Sipah and Shalobar areas of tehsil Bara in Khyber Agency, official sources said.

The ISPR in a statement said on late Saturday night the jet fighters pounded suspected sanctuaries of the militants and inflicted heavy loss on them. Five militant hideouts were demolished in the air offence.  A huge cache of arms and ammunition was also destroyed in the bombardment. However, due to remote areas and lack of communication network the casualties could not be confirmed. It is to be mentioned here that the Operation Khyber One launched by security forces in Bara has now entered in its 10th day.Pakistan has been battling militant groups in its semi-autonomous tribal belt since 2004 after its army entered the region to search for Al-Qaeda fighters who had fled across the border following the US-led invasion of Afghanistan.[contentblock id=2 img=adsense.png]

In June the army began an offensive against militant hideouts in the North Waziristan Agency after a bloody raid on Karachi Airport ended faltering peace talks between the government and the Taliban. North Waziristan is a major base for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The United States has long called for action against militant groups in North Waziristan, who have used the area as a staging post for attacks against Nato forces in Afghanistan. Pakistan Army says it has killed more than 1000 militants and lost 86 soldiers since the start of the operation.
