KARACHI: Hundreds of encroachers of the Bangoria Goth, Gharibabad took to the streets and burnt tyres when the Anti-Encroachment Cell (AEC) team started to demolish their illegally built homes on 3,000 yards. However, due to the strict resistance by the encroachers, two-day time period has been given to them to vacate the land.According to details, an AEC team, including court officials and Deputy District Officer (DDO) Revenue along with heavy machinery, reached the spot and started evacuating the homes built illegally by the area people on Monday. However, the team faced strict resistance by the area people.Enraged protestors took to the streets and burnt tyres, and chanted slogans against the government, which caused a massive traffic jam for several hours. Following the incident, fear and panic gripped the Gharibabad area.Police along with Rangers personnel rushed to the spot and tried to help the AEC team, however they also failed to restore peace and the enraged residents continued to pelt stones on passing vehicles. The residents blamed the government that it wanted to snatch the roof of the poor people. They demanded that government immediately take action and stop the anti-encroachment drive. It is pertinent to mention here that people had allegedly occupied the land for around 20 years. Residents have established concrete homes. It is a slum area and mostly the lower class people live here.SP Gulberg Town Muhammad Asim said the Sindh High Court has given the order to evacuate the land and the drive was carried out on its order. He agreed that these people have been living at Bangoria Goth since the last 20 years; while law enforcement agencies faced strict resistance when they tried to enter the area.SHO Anti-Encroachment Cell Nayyar-ul-Haq said the piece of land has not been completely evacuated as the area people have asked for two days time period – Dailytimes
