NEW YORK (Reuters) – A police officer stationed at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport was suspended on Thursday for taking home more than 1,000 knives, nail clippers, scissors and other items confiscated from passengers during security procedures, authorities said.

The officer, who was not identified, admitted taking the items home, according to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority that oversees the airport.

“These were individual items that had been confiscated from passengers going through the checkpoint because they had been prohibited from being in their carry-on luggage,” said spokesman C. Douglas Hartmayer.

“Things like knives, clippers, box cutters, scissors, corkscrews — items of that nature.”

The items were discovered missing last week, he said. The officer would be suspended for 10 days without pay, he said.

The officer did not provide a reason for taking the items, which authorities believe he did prior to three years ago, when new inventory procedures were instituted, Hartmayer said.

Typically, such items are sent to be recycled, he said. – Yahoonews
