Three lawmakers quit over ‘personal reasons’

LAHORE: Three members of the Punjab Assembly tendered their resignations on Wednesday over ‘personal reasons’ from their elected seats.

Among those who have resigned, Khalid Sargana and Sheikh Yaqoob were treasury members who belonging to the Unification Bloc of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) from Jhang district.Dr Asma Mamdot of the Pakistan Muslim League Functional (PML-F) was the third member to have resigned. She was elected on a reserved seat.According to assembly sources, their resignations have reached the Punjab Assembly Secretariat, in which they said they were quitting over ‘personal reasons’.

Apparently, they were not satisfied with their political parties, and were considering defection.Dr Asma Mamdot of the PML-F from southern Punjab has already announced to join the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), but the other two members are yet to disclose their affiliations.Sources said that Dr Asma had changed her loyalties, hoping that she would be considered for the reserved seat once again, but this time from the platform of the PPP.

Sources also said that Khalid Sargana and Sheikh Yaqoob, seeing the changing political scenario and public opinion in their respective constituencies – PP-77 and PP-78 – were interested in joining the PPP, as the party had a good vote bank there. They said that although the treasury party helped form the Unification Bloc after assuring the dissidents that they would be given party tickets from the PML-N platform for the next general election, the commitment was apparently not being fulfilled. This created unrest among the members of the Unification Bloc, and they were considering switching to some other political party, the sources said. – DailyTimes
