PA okays further hike in traffic penalties

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Thursday further amended the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance (NWFP) 1965 to increase the rates of penalties to discourage violations of traffic laws in the province.The bill was tabled by Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Arshad Abdullah and further proposed amendments were withdrawn by the mover.Traffic penalties aimed to discourage reduce traffic violations.Taking the floor, the minister said that the purpose of revamping of the rate of penalties for the violation of traffic laws was not to increase the revenue of the province, but to discourage violations.

Under the amendment penalties for the traffic violations for all kind of vehicles included motor cycle, motorcar/jeep, light transport vehicle and heavy transport vehicle/public service vehicle have been revamped.The list of the violations is comprised of 53 different violations of traffic laws and rate for each penalties starting from exceeding prescribed speed limit with Rs200, Rs300, Rs500 and Rs700 for motorcycle, motorcar/jeep, light transport vehicle and heavy transport vehicle/public service  – Statesman
