Modern slaughter houseQUETTA: A modern slaughter house costing Rs 260 million has been completed which would soon be made operational under the City municipal corporation.

Balochistan Secretary for Livestock Aslam Shakir told APP here Thursday that the facility had been constructed with financial assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB) which would greatly help provide meat to the citizens in a hygienic manner.”The newly established slaughter house would also help check sale of impure meat to the consumers which is currently widely practiced by butchers in absence of a proper slaughter house in the city,” he said and added the only slaughter house in the provincial capital was rendered dysfunctional following its shifting from Gawalmandi to Bypass area which encouraged the butchers to slaughter and sell the meat of ail animals in their shops.

This practice also caused severe environmental and sanitation problems as the butchers instead of properly disposing the remains of slaughtered animals, placed them at roadside chocking already dilapidated drainage system of the city.Referring to cattle smuggling to neighboring countries, he said plans are afoot to check the smuggling.He said the department is also taking steps to promote dairy farming in the province and devise an effective mechanism for the dairy products of the province to international market. – Thenews
